I had low expectations. I'm a twenty-something creative writing major and I just wanted a book I could get through quickly and get some mild enjoyment out of over my winter holiday. It took me approximatly 5 hours to read (and I'm kind of a slow reader) so it met my first expectation.

As far as being mildly enjoyable it hit the mark there too. Was it genius? No way. Actually as a writing student it was fun to correct his writing mistakes in my head as I went. But I enjoyed it. The book is nearly 170 pages long. The mystery had me going until page 100 when I put it down for the day. That night I woke in the middle of the night and half asleep I figured out the mystery. I finished the book anxious to see if I was right and I was. I literally figured out the mystery in my sleep. But the story was entertaining and the characters mildly interesting. And though I had the mystery all sorted out I was still excited to finish the book and confirm that I was correct.

There was one thing I was a little disappointed in, though its nit picking. I was really excited about this book because it was originally published in 1989. I was so ready for some all out 80's goodness! And it was there, the jock was wearing Converse sneakers like Emilio Estevez in Breakfast Club, a Honda Accord passed them on the street so I looked up a picture cause I just had to see what an '88 Accord looked like! I was having so much fun! Then all of a sudden the main characters IPod is blasting in his ears. WHAT??? I double checked, it was written in 89 and reprinted in 06. What the duce?? To make a long story short from what I can surmise it seems that what they did was they wanted to make the new edition of the book relevant to new generation so they swapped out what was probably a walkman in the original edition to be an IPod and changed some cult following film from the 80's to Lord of the Rings and the music at the school dance to Missy Elliot and Kanye West. They made quick name changes to easy things but the problem with this is that the big picture things couldn't be changed. It would require a whole rewrite of sections of the book. For instance, rather than jump on their home PC's and connect to the internet they go to the library computer lab to look through old newspapers. It doesn't make any sense and if you dont know that the book was originally published in 89 and they changed things it really makes it confusing and I can imagine readers feeling like the big picture things that happen don't make any sense and is using lack of technology as a bad plot device like in crappy horror movies.

Anyway, overall I really liked the book. I am looking forward to reading the next one.

3 1/2 Stars, really. Fun read.

Cory is a love sick twit gymnast who falls for a beautiful girl who is both mysterious and odd, so kinds like a wacky Marsha Brady. Soon Cory meets her crazy brother and both Cory and his best friend Lisa (who is madly in love with him, and he can't seem bothered to notice) start experiencing menacing things, of course.

And since it's Fear Street, nothing is like it seems.
I love the Fear Street series and have been a fan of R.L. Stine forever, had to go nostalgic and start this series over, and not regretting it!
Because this really is a three and a half star book. A little predictable, but still fun. Brings back SO many memories. There were a few annoying typos (were they the Corwins or the Convins?) that could have been easily fixed. And whoever updated this book - it was originally published in the 80s - didn't take into consideration that a lot more has changed than just the music. I mean, seriously, does anyone know a teenager without a cell phone these days? But overall, the story still held up. It was a good, quick read that didn't require a great deal of thought.
This book was a thriller from beginning to end. It keeps you wondering about this mysterious girl that the main character keeps seeing at school. Is she a ghost? Is she real? Also what is up with her brother, who keeps trying to scare people away from the house. Good introduction to the Fear Street series.
I think this first Fear Street book had a really good premise, and a decent plot. The only issue I really had was it seemed rather repetitive. There were several scenes that it seemed like he couldn't think of what to do with, so he just reused the same spot over and over. Granted, it's not like the book is meant to carry over to a bunch of different places, considering it's about a place called "Fear Street".

I don't know, I guess overall I liked it well enough, and I for sure will keep reading. I'm sure the farther we get in the series, the better they will get. Right?
I ordered this book because I was searching in young adult fiction to try and feel out what genre I am most compelled to write. myself. This book took me back to my grade school days when I read R.L.Stine. It was a quick fun read, although now that I am older, of course I have the ability to question loop-holes, but even then, the story-line and ending wasn't so ridiculous that it felt like time wasted. The writing is good overall and the characters are likable, even if for the age-related audience, under-developed. I liked the fact that there was no vulgarity or sex and real violence, but was able to maintain a fun creepiness. I am by no means a novice but rather an enthusiast. Would read more stories like this.
Holy nostalgia, Batman! The very first Fear Street book... took me right back to my childhood. I can't review on R.L. Stine's writing, because I'm an adult and this book/series is obviously meant for preteens/ young teens. This isn't literary award winning material. BUT, it is great for kids that are looking for a good read, a few twists and turns in the plot, and some spooky elements thrown in for good measure. I always loan out Fear Street books to students that want something scarier than Goosebumps, but might not be committed to 300+ page books.
