As I first started reading this book, it was soooo cute/funny/accurate that I put it down immediately and ran to purchase the book on Amazon for my husband (and the father of my pug) for Christmas. I just couldn’t believe what I was reading: it was exactly as though the author was describing OUR pug! (Please see above: the gorgeous beauty in my profile picture!)

Perhaps it was the line “snorting, wheezing, sneezing muffinheads"!?

Sadly, the book took a turn for the worst about half-way in, when for some inexplicable reason the author decides that babying her dogs wasn't enough, and now she wanted a “real child.” Poor Clara and her poor sister Sophie (who also sounded pretty cute even though she was totally nuts) were barely mentioned during this overly-detailed and frustrating portion of the book. Truly, I could not imagine someone voluntarily putting themselves through such a huge hassle of international adoption. (And the incompetence and disrespect that the adoption agency showed her was maddening).

At the end of the writing, the author should have considered changing the title of the book from “Clara: The story of the pug who ruled my life” to “Clara: The story of the pug who was relegated to the backseat of my life as I went through a tedious adoption process.”

Although, truthfully, she never really seemed enchanted with the pugs in the first place: pugs are not pets, they are your baby.

The author's style is so upbeat and refreshingly funny I couldn't put it down! Time and again I found myself nodding in agreement and commiseration. For the first time in years I found myself laughing out loud on a New York City subway train. If you've had pugs, do yourself a favor and read this book. At the least, you'll know you aren't alone.
Read this many years ago and am rereading it again. Delightful read that has had me laughing out loud several times. If you love Pugs, you'll definitely love this book.
A really funny book! I missed hearing about it when it was first out. After I read it just recently, I tried to see if there were more follow-up books about Clara the pug. I learned, very belatedly, that the author Margo Kaufman died of cancer in 2000, not very long after this book came out. Such a loss of a very talented woman.
As the owner of a female Pug that I raised from 8 weeks, this book is so right on about the breed. To the non-Pug owner, I recommend this read as one of the most hilarious and tender books I have ever read. Margo Kaufman is has a way of painting word pictures and bringing Clara to life -- not so much as a dog but as a little person. Clara is charming, willful, clever and too darn smart to be just a dog.
Just read one chapter and you are hooked. Neva S
As the owner of 3 pugs, it's soon apparent that the author knows pugs. I love reading dog books and books on pugs are few and often silly. I laughed out loud at Clara as she reminded me of one of my own. Through the book I grew to love Clara and found I did not care for the author nearly as much. This was a really good read for the first 2/3's of the book. Then it suddenly changes into a completely different story about foreign adoption, and I don't mean pug adoption. After the author and husband leave home to pick up their adopted baby, there's barely a mention about Clara or her sister pug Sophie. If you're at all interested in adopting children from other countries, then you have 2 books in 1. If not, then you still have a good read about a remarkable dog, even exceptional for a pug.
I remember the first time I read this book a few years ago and I laughed so hard. I am just now re-reading it and am loving it all over again. I'm not sure why the author wasn't more popular in her lifetime - she has a great way of writing, very easy to read and very witty. It's fun hearing about her rich mom in NYC and her beachfront bohemian neighborhood and her husband and her effort to adopt a Chinese baby, all thrown into the book. If you've ever loved a pet, you'll recognize yourself in her humorous retellings of dealing with her pug Clara, a little furry diva.
Then this book belongs on your shelf with other pug books. Margo Kaufman is extremely witty with a great comedic sense. She was able to bring many of a pug's quirks to the pages of this book and I found myself laughing at all the little things that most every pug does; Including the head tilt, using their front paws as almost human hands and more. It was very fun to read through the pages to see which quirk was next. I thought I knew them all but I found some new ones that I thought were just my pugs' eccentricities. The last third of the book is less about the pugs and more about her struggle to go through an international adoption process. Whew! It made me tired. I can only imagine how long she had to recoup, especially with a newborn son and a couple of angry pugs. Of course, the pugs got over the intrusion by the new baby quickly. After all, pugs live for treats and human affection.
