Where the first book was dark and sexy, Scandalous Desires is emotional….and sexy! As we’ve learned over the past two books, Silence has not had it easy. She was publicly shamed by Micky O’Connor when she approached him to save her husband from going to prison, but her marriage was not the same afterward. And then her husband was killed at sea. The only bright spot in her life was baby Mary Darling, who she learns is Micky’s daughter. He’s come to claim her. Kind of. His biggest enemy is looking to hurt him and that means getting to Silence and Mary, which Micky is not going to let happen.Scandalous Desires was so good! I was kind of expecting Silence to be down and gloomy and then saved by the power of love, but that’s not this story. Silence is mourning her husband, but she’s not down or gloomy. She’s looking at the bright side, even learning that her life may be in danger. She’s going to do anything to protect that baby. I loved that while she does go into hiding when Micky tells her to, she isn’t going to just do everything he says. She has her own mind and she’s going to use it. It was also great how she stands up to him and won’t settle for less than what she deserves and wants.
There’s also a pretty good plot driving Scandalous Desires. The Vicar is coming after Micky, but not directly. He wants to get him where it really hurts: in his heart. We also learn some things about the Vicar that make this situation even worse and broke my heart for Micky. A lot of sad stuff happens to Silence and Micky here, but they always rise above it. The ending did have me really worried, because how can they get out of that?! Well, luckily there’s a certain someone watching out for them.
I really enjoyed Scandalous Desires. Silence and Micky are just perfect for each other despite what he had done to her previously. Obviously he’s the pirate with a heart of gold! And that epilogue left me dying for the next book! I am so curious about this mysterious Ghost.

Scandalous Desires Maiden Lane Book 3 edition by Elizabeth Hoyt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
What a great story! I'm not a fan of pirate stories, but this one is just so wonderful it was worth the exception.
Michael is the perfect imperfect hero troubled, strong, criminal but somehow honorable, hardened by life but pure honey inside. He comes from the gutter and he does not repent of his sins.
Silence is so pure, so naive, yet she is so strong deep down. She sees a part of Michael that his traumas in life had hidden even from himself. She sees the good man he had the potential to be.
What remarkable characters!
The story starts with Silence coming to Michael’s (Mick O’Connor) palace to demand the return of Mary Darling, a baby that has been left by Silence’s door a year before and that was raised by her like a daughter at the orphanage she managed with her brother Winter.
Turns out Mary is Mick’s daughter and he stole the girl from the orphanage because he found out his greatest enemy had discovered the girl and intended to hurt her in order to reach him.
He refuses to give Mary Darling back but offers Silence the possibility to stay at his palace with the baby and take her back with her once he is able to get rid of his enemy.
What started as despise and aversion ends up turning into admiration and respect as both of them get to know (and understand) each other better.
They are so very different, and yet, there is a clear common ground on which their relationship is beautifully built by Mrs. Hoyt.
Some parts of the book are very sensual, but it fits the story well as Mick, after an infancy of hungry and violence, takes all pleasures life can give him with no half measures.
Beautiful book! Great story! To read and read and read again...
3.5 I love you with my Black Heart Stars
When the end of the Wheel of Time gets you down it is time to binge read a lot of HR and smut. Continuing on my journey to purge the book hangover of that series.
This is a little bit like a beauty and the beast retelling in a lot of ways. I was super excited for Chaming Mickey and then he started out as such a freaking jerk. Like more than the normal jerkfacedness of most HR books. But he is apparently really sexy.
I wanted this story from the minute I ended the first book of the series and it opens with Mickey forcing Silence to come live with him. Well he didn’t kidnap her or anything (that might have been better) but he did kidnap his daughter and tell Silence that she could stay with him and Mary Darling OR she was welcome to leave but she would not be taking the baby she had treated as hers over the last year. What is she to do.
Really most of the rest of it is a take on Beauty and the Beast. If you don’t want to eat with me then you will not eat at all and there is even a lot of stuff to do with books and his exquisite library. Does this ring any bells for anyone else? With the help of some of the men in his crew Mickey learns that he can’t treat Silence the way that he has treated everyone else in his life and maybe, just maybe he will need to listen to her needs and wants and treat her like a person if he is going to get her to stay voluntarily once the ‘Danger’ she and Mary Darling are in has passed.
Okay, so I totally hated Mickey the first half of the book and then he starting to show why maybe some would find him charming. I liked the romance that grew between him and Silence to the culmination of their feelings.
She raised her head, glaring angrily. “You don’t even believe in love. Why are you agreeing with me?”
He laughed.
“Because”—he leaned down and licked at the tears on her cheeks, his lips brushing softly against her sensitive skin as he spoke, “ye’ve bewitched and bespelled me, my sweet Silence, didn’t ye know? I’ll agree that the sky is pink, that the moon is made o’ marzipan and sugared raisins, and that mermaids swim the muddy waters o’ the Thames, if ye’ll only stop weepin’. Me chest breaks apart and gapes wide open when I see tears in yer pretty eyes. Me lungs, me liver, and me heart cannot stand to be thus exposed.”
Overall I liked the romance and the hints to Mickey’s background and why no amount of treasure will ever feel like enough to him. But the rest of the story didn’t have any surprises for me. I knew who the bad guy was to Mickey I even figured out right away who the traitor was in his midst.
These have been really okay HR reads for me so far but I’m waiting for that great book. I know it is out there for this author and we are just getting warmed up. Still I’m a little tired of the man-whore finding the woman of his dreams that is practically as pure as snow who changes him forever. But Winter’s book is next and I KNOW he isn’t a man-whore so this could be fun.
