In Back Stabbers (number 8 in Julie Mulhern’s Country Club Murders series), Ellison Russell discovers a body. Not a surprise. Ellison has developed quite a reputation for discovering bodies. This time it’s her stockbroker, siting behind his desk, with his pants around his ankles. And that’s not the last of the disasters plaguing the firm.Meanwhile, Ellison’s half-sister Karma comes to visit, staying with Ellison at her dad’s insistence. After all the only other choice would be for Karma to stay with Ellison’s parents, and if Ellison is surprised by Karma’s existence, she can hardly imagine how her mother will react.
And then there’s Ellison’s relationship with Anarchy Jones, who is all too previously acquainted with Karma. And Ellison’s daughter Grace, who has brought home a rescue cat. Max, the dog in residence, does not approve.
As always, Mulhern has written a good mystery, populated with quirky and amusing characters, and set in the upper social circles of Kansas City in the early 1970s, back before cell phones and computers changed life so much.

Back Stabbers The Country Club Murders Book 8 edition by Julie Mulhern Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
From the beginning I have throughly enjoyed Julie Mulhern's 'Country Club Murders' series. The characters are relatable, and interesting, and the family dynamics are realistic. The setting of the books is the 1970's and realistically remembered. I'm not sure if Ms. Mulhern personally remembers that era, but many of her readers do, and it's a lot of fun to re-live those times, fashions, and mores.
Now, on to this installment in the series. The writing is so seamless, it flows from the pages. The new character of Ellison's half-sister is introduced, and she's a terrific addition to Ellison's world (and family)(her name is Karma - which is fitting with the era as well). I began this story, and couldn't put it down, and was sorry to have it end. I will be happy when the next book in the series appears.
The plot to this story is well developed, although meandering, but in the best possible manner. I was absolutely surprised at the resolution as to who the killer was in this story. Sometimes I am able to guess correctly, but I was wrong with my guess for this story.
I urge all readers who like the 'cozy' mystery genre to read these books. If you are on the search for fully-realized characters, and look for writing that is well-developed, and desire interesting plots you will not be disappointed in this series.
This installment in the series is a 'keeper.' Don't miss it.
I have read and enjoyed every single book in this mystery series. I enjoy it so much, I recommend it whenever I can. As far as cozy mystery series go, I don’t know if you can do better.
The series is set in Kansas City during the 1970’s. The characters are part of the upper crust, country club herd.
Ellison Russell is our sleuth extraordinaire. While she is part of the country club group by birth, she is busy trying to break out and make a life of her own. Well, except it is pretty nice to have the money and the house and the… you name it. She also has a teenage daughter who is as flip as you can imagine.
Her mother is a hoot though she seems to blame Ellison for her social faux pax of habitually finding dead bodies. Ellison is pretty tired of it, too.
As usual, Ellison discovers a corpse and this one is one that she will likely never forget. This starts the ball rolling and she is drawn into solving the crime and others along the way.
Her relationship with Detective Anarchy Jones moves along at the pace of a stampede of turtles – that is to say, a little on the slow side. That’s okay, I think relationships that are built slow can be built true from the beginning.
I’m already waiting for the next book to be published and, in the meantime, have discovered Ms. Mulhern has started publishing a new (and much more modern) mystery series. So off I go to read those, too.
Julie has written yet another fast paced book. We get to meet more of the inside crowd in the Kansas City's elite. Their clothes come from the couture sections of the most fashionable stores, yet many have a torrid story behind the veneer of their perfect life.
Ellison one of the elite has an unfortunate habit of turning up bodies in the most unusual place. Her inside knowledge of the society crowd helps the Kansas City Detective Anarchy Jones find the killers.
This book adds tension between Ellison and Anarchy when her step sister ends up as a somewhat uninvited guest. Ellison discovers that Karma the step sister has a history with Anarchy.
Julie always highlights the social issues that were relevant in the 70's and can remain so today. This book takes on unwanted sexual demands from men and the secretaries in their employment. Women needed jobs so badly that many overlooked the behavior of their bosses. Bravo Ms. Mulhern for yet another fast paced and interesting book.
You found a way to keep your readers wanting more.
