This is the first Carla Kelly novel I have read. I thought it was reasonably well-written with an engaging plot and characters. There are other good reviews that summarize the story. I won't repeat. First, I want to say, in general, it probably deserves 3.5 stars. I'm pretty stingy with stars, so that's actually really good. I certainly enjoyed the developing friendship between the H/h which, if course, heads down the normal predicted road to romance.... this IS, after all, a romance novel. Carla Kelly certainly achieves what she sets out to and does it with a reasonable amount of finesse, only rarely veering into what I call the more "vapid" romance style without any real substance. Emma, the protagonist, is somewhat hidden, a fact some reviewers didn't like. I thought otherwise, she was hidden for a reason, with her background revealed later on and she's a very intelligent woman, I very much enjoyed her character. Lord Ragsdale, of course the male protagonist, is well revealed and, yes, as other reviewers noted, it is fun seeing the growth of his character as well as Emma's. Their repartee was, at times, engaging, fun and witty and at other times sweet. I though Kelly handled both dialogue and description well and definitely kept the story moving forward. It certainly kept my interest.I though the ending was slightly unbelievable, but at the risk of repeating myself, it IS, after all, a romance.
Finally, it is exceptionally clean with the only exception being the beginning where we encounter Lord Ragsdale and his mistress. I am sorry to the sensitive natured person BUT I saw nothing unclean in Kelly's description. She simply was honest about a recency-era Lord taking a mistress. As I recall he even fell asleep instead of... ahem... doing you-know-what. I couldn't fathom what those 1-star reviewers were talking about. The rest of the novel, once he gave up his mistress (no spoiler, it happens extremely early in the story), is very, very squeaky clean!
I WAS curious, having noticed that Kelly is not listed as a Christian author, how she handled such a story. From what I can tell, Kelly occasionally does, in Other novels, throw in sexual scenes. That is not the case here. A kiss, and not even a passionate one, was the extent!!
Anyway, enjoyed. Not sure I'll ever 're-read. Not sure I think the story is worth any more than a 100 other such Novels but Kelly writes better than most and, again, I found it engaging. I'd say you decide yourself if you think it's worth the kindle price. For myself, I personally prefer novels that have a more decided God factor. Personal preference and, e.g. Sarah Eden's novels. But Kelly's writing, characters and plot are every bit as good as the one I read of Eden's.

Reforming Lord Ragsdale Signet Regency Romance Carla Kelly 9780451184658 Books Reviews
I liked the premise of this. Emma is rather captivating but it felt all a bit too unbelievable. The ending is what pushed this to a three star. Running away to Australia. Really?
I’ll start of by saying that I liked the premise of the book and overall I feel that the character development was good. I really liked how frequently the author included the thoughts of Lord Ragsdale and Emma so that I as the reader could truly get a feel for who they really were. There are a few things that make my rating what it is. I am not expert of the time period, however there were parts of the novel that I am sure that were inappropriate for the setting and time. (For example, Lord Ragsdale discussing who his next mistress should be with his grandmother or Emma being present when he was getting a bath) This was a bit of a turn off for me, as one of the things that I personally enjoy about the regency period is the high standards of decorum. I also found that I actually liked Lord Ragsdale much quicker than I took to Emma. While his behavior was in no way to be condoned, I wish, especially since she was given the real reason behind his “antics” rather early on in book, that she would have acted with more patience and empathy. Had the author made her so, it definitely would have made her more charismatic. In addition, while I thought the author did an excellent job slowly showing the gradual development of feelings that Lord Ragsdale had for Emma, I was disappointed that the same was not done for Emma towards him. More time was spent in his head than hers and the few times we did get to “read” her thoughts, they were non progressive. I also disliked the fact that she would be angered internally at Lord Ragsdale for not seeing the good in himself and then a few pages later she would be guilty of doing that very thing! I can tolerate that more so if that were just the beginning of the story but at 2/3 of the way through, that gets to be annoying. In addition, it was hard for me to imagine them falling in love when the author on more than a few occasions said that some of Lord Ragsdale’s actions reminded her of her younger brothers. Admittingly she did love her brothers, but to me that was odd to keep comparing the two. At long last, (85% through the novel) the development between them gets exciting and I found myself anxiously awaiting their HEA. It did drag on, but it was a satisfying one with a few laugh out loud moments. I wish however that we were told what became of their journey to find her father and brother. The story ended rather abruptly on that end. There were aspects of this that really could have made this a 5 star read. I truly ended up loving Lord Ragsdale. It's on the strength of his character alone that I give this a 4 star rating. And I greatly appreciate the fact that the author did establish a solid foundation of friendship and love between our characters. She made the characters(esp Lord Ragsdale) show their love by their actions not just words. Overall I would recommend this to a patient reader who wants to indulge in a story of the transformation of enemies to friends to wholesome lovers.
I have not read Carla Kelly before, but the premise of the book sounded interesting. I was quite disappointed. No chemistry at all between John and Emma, and I kept wondering where the romance part of the plot was going to happen. Another reviewer called this a Disney version of a Regency romance, and I thought that a perfect description.
The supporting characters were vacuous and cliched and I missed the period details that many Regency authors put in their books.
All in all, a disappointment. I hope her other books have more depth. I felt cheated of a really promising love story. And I won’t even start with the (very rushed) ending. So in basically a couple of days he managed to become the person running the penal system in Australia (can’t remember the official’s title), book himself passage with Emma and her brother and obtain a special license to marry??? Really??? Why couldn’t the Captain marry them?
Not a good start with a new author.
